Tang Dynasty, from 618 to 907, is one of the most well-known dynasties in Chinese history. Chinese are very proud of the Tang Dynasty. Druing that period, the world called Chinese people as Tang people, that's because the Tang dynasty's prosperious economy. The Tang dynasty has a long history of about 300 years. It became the largest, richest, most sophisticated state in the world at that time. Its influence spread out to many countries in Asia, Europe and Africa. Neighboring countries sought and established ties with the empire and its capital, Chang'an became the center of cultural exchange between China and other countries. Agriculture developed greatly. Large areas of wasteland were brought under cultivation and paddy fields laid out for the planting of rice. Much attention was given to the matter of irrigation. During the first one hundred and thirty years of their rule, the Tang Dynasty constructed some 170 water conservancy plans. New mechanical systems such as waterwheels were introduced to raise water to higher levels thereby increasing efficiency and making it possible to bring yet more land into use. This increased agricultural output improved economy as a whole together with cultural and social development. Literature met its peak in Tang Dynasty. The brilliance of poetry during the period attests to an unparalleled and glorious flowering of creativity. Legal system also improved greatly. China built up its own complete legal code at that period based on the laws of earlier dynasties. Its influence also reached out to other Asian countries. In science, the Tang Dynasty contributed a lot to the development of astronomy, medicine and printing technique in Chinese history.

As we all know, the most glorious cultural achievements in the Tang Dynasty were the distinguished Tang Poems. It is considered the golden age of Chinese poetry. There were many famous poets in that period ,and they left many great poems to us. Li Bai is one of the most famous poets in Chinese history. His poems are published every year and still popular after hundred of years. Many of his poems are selected into the textbooks of every grade in Chinese schools.

In addition, the form of the ancient novel called 'Chuan Qi' began to take shape in the Tang Dynasty. Having a complete story structure and various characters, novels in that period started to reflect social reality. Some representative works were Zhenzhong Ji, Yingying Zhuan and LiwaZhuan.

Due to the prosperous cultural development in the Tang Dynasty, cultural exchange between China and many foreign countries was frequent. Many overseas students including Japanese and Korean students came to study in the capital Chang'an (currently Xian). Friendly cultural exchange also took place between China and Arabic region. New items, such as emeralds, pepper and Islam were gradually introduced into China.

As for the religion, in the early period of the Tang Dynasty, the rulers' policy towards religion was tolerant. During the reign of Emperor Taizong, a famous Buddhist Monk named Xuan Zang went to the west to study Buddhism. The founder of Buddhism in this world is Buddha Shakyamuni. He was born as a royal prince in 624 BC in a place called Lumbini, which was originally in northern India but is now part of Nepal.During his travels he studied with many famous Buddhist masters, especially at the famous center of Buddhist school. When he returned, he brought with him some 657 Sanskrit texts. With the emperor's support, he set up a large translation bureau in Chang'an, drawing students and collaborators from all over East Asia. He is credited with the translation of some 1,330 fascicles of scriptures into Chinese. From then on, the Buddhism in China became prosperous.
